There’s a bumper sticker UD could print up. I’d buy one.

When, in the above article, John Leland, director of UDRI, tells the DDN reporter that they do things like work on “glues and lubricants,” I’m afraid I do not think it’s a complete answer, because they also boast about their work, for example, developing wings for the A-10 Warthog combat aircraft. And even if glues and lubes are all they’ve done for the Minuteman III missile, which apparently carries a single 300-kiloton nuclear warhead these days, which would burn down Dayton (for example) from downtown all the way to Kennedy Union in the space of time that students are given to change classes, it is still not work that most thinking people would believe aligns with the New Testament.
Nuclear weapons do not dovetail well with Catholic universities. If you have a problem with that, talk to the Pope about it:
“What can be said, too, about those governments which count on nuclear arms as a means of ensuring the security of their countries? Along with countless persons of good will, one can state that this point of view is not only baneful but also completely fallacious.” – Pope Benedict XVI 12/15/05

Imagine all the things that need to be researched right now. Global warming reduction. Sustainable agriculture methods and organics. Alternative energy sources and efficiency. Computer and robotic solutions to human problems. Communication methods that extend benefits globally. Transportation. Prosthetics for disabled and war veterans. Cures for ravaging diseases. Then take out the UDRI annual report to see what UD has been researching. Propellants for nuclear warheads, ladar surveillance to identify terrorists, delivery systems for chemical-biological weapons using birds, laser triggers to detonate nuclear bombs, bombing run patterns for napalm and agent orange, and enough military contracts to make them the number one Catholic college doing such work. As one Cardinal complained during Vatican II years ago to the other Cardinals in America, “You people would be more upset by planes flying over third world countries dropping condoms than if they were dropping nuclear bombs.” If Christ had stayed in his grave, he’d be rolling in it to see how his message and name are being used.
